City officials are releasing the design for a new train station that would be built in downtown Gonzales should the rail line between Baton Rouge and New Orleans become a reality.

The 80-mile commuter line currently has plans for seven stops along the route, and would have two trips at peak times in the day. Officials hope over time the number of stops would increase, along with the speed of travel.

Chair of the Southern Rail Commission John Spain said there is $300 million in federal funding available for the project, which is supported by Governor John Bel Edwards.
