Florence Becomes Cat 3 Hurricane In Open Atlantic

Florence became the first major hurricane of the 2018 Atlantic season Wednesday, reaching category 3 status with maximum winds of 125 miles an hour.

The current forecast track of Florence keeps the storm over the open Atlantic through early next week. While models suggest a more westerly track of Florence that could bring the storm closer to the U.S East Coast in the future, it is far too early to say that will happen for certain.

The National Hurricane Center is also watching some tropical waves in the far Atlantic. One is expected to become a depression over the next five days. The other is forecast to move off the coast of Africa and has a low chance of development over the same time period.
