The Zachary City Council is hoping an ordinance it approved Monday night will strengthen its goal for every home to have working smoke detectors installed.
The new law takes effect in ten days and requires building inspectors to look for smoke detectors in advance of utilities being connected.
If no detectors are found, the fire department will be notified. They will then meet with the occupants and offer to provide and install two smoke detectors free of charge.
