Bump In BR Police Pay Could Hinge On Property Tax Hike

Recruiting and keeping police officers in Baton Rouge could be a little less difficult if a councilman can get the Metro Council and voters to sign off on his proposal.

The Advocate reports council member Matt Watson is hoping his colleagues will support his proposed eight-mill property tax that would be used to increase the starting salary of a Baton Rouge cop from just shy of $33,000 to nearly $41,000.

He wants the council to debate and approve the issue by January so it can be placed on the April 28th ballot.
