Hurricane Maria Still Forecast To Avoid U.S. Mainland

Hurricane Maria is hitting the Dominican Republic after thrashing Puerto Rico yesterday. Puerto Rico is now without power and the governor says it could be out for months.

The now Category 3 storm is expected to head north and northeast well away from the U.S. mainland.

Meanwhile in Mexico, rescuers are racing against time as they search for survivors trapped beneath crumpled buildings in central Mexico in the wake of the country's deadliest earthquake in 32 years.

Tuesday's magnitude 7.1 earthquake has left at least 245 people dead and that number is expected to rise. Over 20 children and four adults died when a school in Mexico City collapsed.
