Only eight months into the year, and already the East Baton Rouge Parish murder rate exceeds that for all of last year.
The District Attorney's Office says there were 61 homicides in 2016. With five murders just this past week, the parish is saying goodbye to what was the lowest murder rate recorded in a year's time.
DA Hillar Moore can't point to a specific reason for the increase, but says it could be linked in some instances to last year's flooding and the police shooting death of Alton Sterling.
