Scalise Remains In Critical Condition

President-Elect Donald Trump Holds Meetings At Trump Tower

Louisiana Congressman Steve Scalise is hospitalized with serious injuries after getting shot near Washington.

The Republican and U.S. House Majority Whip was among four people injured in a shooting Wednesday during a Republican Congressional baseball team practice in Alexandria, Virginia, a suburb just outside of the nation's capital.

The perpetrator was identified as 66-year-old James T. Hodgkinson, who was shot and killed by police.

Scalise was transported to MedStar Washington Hospital Center in northeast D.C. and was listed in critical condition Wednesday night.

Congressman Scalise is expected to remain in the hospital after suffering extensive bleeding from a gunshot wound to the hip.

His office issued a statement on his condition late Wednesday. "The bullet traveled across his pelvis, fracturing bones, injuring internal organs and causing severe bleeding.  He underwent immediate surgery, and an additional procedure to stop bleeding.  He has received multiple units of blood transfusion.  His condition is critical, and he will require additional operations."
