Turning down a plea deal was a risky move, but that risk is paying off for a man accused in a shooting.
Donaldsonville's John Winfrey was acquitted last week of aggravated assault for firing his gun at a driver Winfrey says was backing his car toward him and refused to stop.
Instead of taking a plea that would have reduced the charge to a misdemeanor, Winfrey pleaded not guilty under the Stand Your Ground law and was found not guilty.
No one was hurt in the shooting, and the driver was not charged.
