Octavio Bringas (WBRZ)
(WBRZ News 2) A 16-year-old was shot and killed on his birthday Monday afternoon.
East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's deputies were dispatched to the 4700 block of Southpark Drive where they found the teenager shot. The teen, identified as Darius Plummer, died at the hospital.
People who live in the apartment complex near Airline Highway where the shooting happened said they did not recognize Plummer, and that they thought he often visited the complex but may not have lived there.
Documents say that several individuals told detectives that 49-year-old Octavio Bringas was the only other person inside the apartment at the time of the shooting. Bringas' family said they heard one shot, went into the home and discovered Plummer suffering from a gunshot wound. Bringas had fled the scene.
According to EBRSO, Bringas contacted one of the witnesses and said he was playing with a gun when it discharged, striking Plummer. Bringas said he would not return to the scene, would not talk to police and was heading to Lafayette.

Later Monday Louisiana State Police arrested Bringas as, they believe, he was trying to leave the state.
A spokesperson with the East Baton Rouge Parish School System said Plummer had once attended Broadmoor High School but transferred to Zachary.
Investigators note that Bringas is an "undocumented person" living in the United States. He was charged with second-degree murder and booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison Tuesday.
