"Intrusive Smell" Leads To Shelter-In-Place In Ascension Parish

An intrusive smell that prompted a shelter-in-place at Donaldsonville Primary School turned out to be herbicide, the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office said Friday.

The smell caused a stink shortly before 11 a.m. The Ascension Parish Schools central office and Ascension Head Start also sheltered in place as a precaution.

The Sheriff's Office says a farmer in the area was spraying his field with herbicide, used to destroy vegetation, when the wind shifted and sent the odor towards the school.

The smell is not a threat to the public.
