Prisoner Release Possible To Save Louisiana Money

State lawmakers continue their special session to figure out how to close a $304 million midyear budget deficit.

But Louisiana Corrections Secretary Jimmy LeBlanc says if a budget plan being pushed by Republican House legislators is approved, he would be forced to release over 2500 prisoners. LeBlanc says that's the only way his department would be able to handle the proposed spending cut.

Lawmakers also want to cut funds from K-12 schools and higher education, with about $50 million coming from the state's rainy day fund.
