As he looked back on his first year in office Wednesday, John Bel Edwards says he's producing something no other governor has in almost a decade - honest budgets. Edwards says the budget gimmicks of the past are gone.
He also said he has cut more than $850 million in government spending and is taking what he calls a responsible approach to balancing the budget.
His priorities for his second year in office include a solution to the state's long-term budget problems and making sure everyone affected by flooding last year gets back on their feet. Another priority is reducing the prison population that right now is the highest in the country.
Students struggling to pay for college might find a sympathetic ear from the Governor. Edwards said he knows the state hasn't done enough for students, and says we have to do better.
