President Donald Trump says it was Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry's idea for Landry to serve as special envoy to Greenland.
In a news conference on Monday at Mar-A-Lago, Trump said the Republican governor called him with the suggestion.
The president said Landry told him Greenland should become a United States territory for national security purposes, not for minerals.
Landry says he plans to have a "great conversation with those folks in Greenland," complete with Cajun food.
The prime ministers of Denmark and Greenland are both chilly to the idea, with Denmark summoning the U.S. ambassador over the Landry's appointment.
