A Baton Rouge firm is the recipient of a $1.4-billion contract from the Department of Energy to maintain the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.

APTIM, an environmental consultancy company, will manage and operate the nation's emergency stockpile of petroleum.

APTIM will take charge of the reserve on June 15 for a five-year period, with an option for the DOE to extend the contract another five years.

The federally owned oil stocks are stored in salt caverns at four sites along the Gulf Coast in Louisiana and Texas.
