Senior Athlete Julia 'Hurricane' Hawkins Dies At 108

Funeral arrangements are pending for Senior Olympian Julia "Hurricane" Hawkins, who died Tuesday evening in Baton Rouge at age 108.

In 2017, Hawkins was 101 when she became the oldest woman to compete in the National Senior Games 50-meter and 100-meter dash events.

Two years later in 2019 at 105 years old, she set new world and U.S. records in the 100-meter race at the Louisiana Senior Games in Hammond.

Hawkins was a Ponchatoula native who attended LSU and went on to teach there.
