Saints players will be allowed to wear guardian caps for the first time in the upcoming season.

The caps are designed to reduce concussions, and will be used in practice and regular-season games.

Some local high school football teams will also make use of the caps, which first became available about three years ago and weren't popular at first.

Coaches and players were afraid they would trap heat and add extra weight, but it turns out they're lightweight and breathe well.
