Rural Road Safety Awareness Week is underway, by proclamation of Governor Jeff Landry.
State officials say rural roads in Louisiana were the scene of 530 fatal crashes in 2022, more than 60 percent of all traffic fatalities.
The Louisiana Highway Safety Commission says less than 40 percent of the state's crashes happen on rural roads, but they tend to be deadlier.
Rural Road Safety Awareness Week started Monday and continues through Friday.
