The Bayou Grosse Tete drawbridge along Louisiana Highway 77 will be closed indefinitely after it was struck by a vessel Thursday morning.
The Iberville Parish bridge is takes traffic from LA77 between Grosse Tete and Plaquemine.
"The bridge was damaged by a vessel on the Port Allen Lock this morning at approximately 5:30 and will remain closed until further notice," according to a press release from the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness.
Iberville Parish Sheriff Brett Stassi expects the crossing will be down for a minimum of three months.
Next week, a pedestrian ferry will be set up, but it will be a hassle for the 1,500 cars that use the bridge daily.
A cause of the accident has yet to be determined. No injuries were reported.
