The Humane Society of Louisiana says horses that carried carnival royalty through the streets of New Orleans are up for adoption.

Horse brokers bring the animals into the city to meet the demand created by the parades during Mardi Gras.

The nonprofit says the parade horses were often sold to slaughterhouses in Mexico after the festivities were over.

The Humane Society started the Mardi Gras Horse Adoption Program in 2017. Since that time, more than 100 Mardi Gras horses have been adopted.
