Nearly two dozen people are applying to be the next chief of the Baton Rouge Police Department.

The 23 applicants placed their names in the running by last Friday's deadline.

Seventeen of them are currently or formerly employed by the BRPD.

The rest are from the police departments of Lake Charles and Central, Ochsner Hospital Security, the Motorist Assistance Patrol of the state Department of Transportation and Development, and FedEx, plus a court liaison.

BRPD Chief Murphy Paul says he'll step down once a new chief is hired.
