Louisiana lawmakers are moving closer to imposing a mandatory life sentence for possessing a certain amount of fentanyl.

House Bill 90, which would send people caught with more than 28 grams of fentanyl to prison for the rest of their lives, passed in the chamber yesterday.

Right now, the sentence for possessing that much fentanyl is between five-to-forty years behind bars.

The bill is now headed to the Louisiana Senate.
