The state of Louisiana is 211 years old as of Sunday.

On April 30th, 1812, Congress admitted Louisiana as the 18th state in the Union, just nine years after the Louisiana Purchase.

Louisiana is nicknamed the Pelican State. It's divided into 64 parishes, the equivalent of counties in other states.

Its latest state constitution dates to 1974.

Its congressional delegation is two U.S. Senators and six members of the U.S. House of Representatives, so the state has eight Electoral Votes.

Louisiana's motto is "Union, Justice, Confidence."
