The Baton Rouge Police Department is having trouble getting new patrol cars because of supply chain problems.
The department says its fleet is suffering a shortage of cars because of the lack of computer chips.
Since police cars are high-mileage vehicles, they usually have to be replaced every three to six years.
The department says it has a backlog of about 280 cars.
Until new cars arrive, police have to keep the older cars on the streets for a longer time, which drives up maintenance costs.
