The Baton Rouge Metro Council said no Wednesday to a proposal to take money from libraries and mosquito control to fund drainage improvements.
Councilmembers voted 7-4 against the plan re-dedicating existing property taxes meant for the libraries and mosquito abatement to increase drainage maintenance funding.
The Council listened to public comments with opponents saying citizens voted in 2015 to dedicate that money to the libraries.
Supporters argued that the proposal would reduce library funding from $110 per capita to $104 per capita, which is still above the national average of $44 per capita.
