East Baton Rouge Parish Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome has signed an executive order mandating the use of face coverings in parts of the parish, especially inside businesses.
The "No Mask, No Service" policy will go into effect at Noon Friday.
“This is an effort to protect the health and well-being of residents and visitors -- and to assist in the safe reopening of the parish economy without the need for the stricter economic mitigation efforts put in place earlier this year,” said Mayor Broome. “The 'No Mask, No Service' policy will help ensure our businesses can remain open and safely serve customers. My message to our community is simple: save a life, save our economy, and wear a face covering.”
The executive order is scheduled to remain in effect through August 3, but will be re-evaluated before that date. People caught not following the new order could face misdemeanor summons.
A FAQ from the mayor's office noted the order does not apply to Zachary, Baker and Central, however, Baker Mayor Darnell Waites does urge residents and visitors to wear a mask while out in public.
