The East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office is going to update its policies following a nationwide wave of calls for stricter policies related to agency diversity and use of force.
The police department held a news conference Tuesday about its ongoing reforms and Sheriff Sid Gautreaux said that they have already made changes within the department.
Gautreaux said they've banned neck restraints and choke-holds and have begun training against using those tactics.
The sheriff's office also said deputies are trained in de-escalation, and some are specially trained in counseling, negotiations and other means to avoid a more forceful maneuver.
A third-party review is underway of department policies and procedures.
