Today marks the official start of the Atlantic hurricane season and officials are urging homeowners and renters to purchase flood insurance immediately.
Officials are telling people not to wait until the next storm hits to purchase coverage and that the best option is to join the National Flood Insurance Program as soon as possible.
There is a 30-day probationary period before flood policies go into effect, which can be detrimental during hurricane season. Those who wait could find themselves trying to deal with flood damages and no money to fix it.
If you have flood insurance, it is important to keep the policy information with you, especially in the case you are forced to evacuate.
