Subtropical Storm Alberto Named

The 2018 Atlantic hurricane season is not waiting for June 1.

The National Hurricane Center announced Friday that a broad area of low pressure in the northeastern Caribbean had become the first named storm of the season - Subtropical Storm Alberto.

As of the 1 p.m. update, Alberto was nearly stationary with maximum winds near 40 miles per hour. Hurricane hunters will be checking out the storm Friday afternoon.

"On the foreast track, Alberto is expected to pass near the eastern coast of the Yucatan peninsula tonight, be near the western tip of Cuba Saturday morning, emerge over the southeastern Gulf of Mexico by Saturday night, and approach the north-central Gulf Coast on Monday," said the 10 a.m. NHC advisory.

Forecasters are also saying the winds will be rising and could be up to 65 miles per hour before landfall.

The threat to our area remains the same - heavy rains, coastal flooding, and rising rip current concerns.
