It's an early start to the hurricane season for the Gulf Coast.
While it does not officially start until June 1, the National Hurricane Center says the Memorial Day weekend will have action in the Gulf.
A broad surface low slowly drifting northward towards the Yucatan Peninsula as of Thursday afternoon now has a high chance of becoming a subtropical or tropical depression by late Saturday over the southeastern Gulf of Mexico.
Hurricane hunters are set to check out the system Friday afternoon if needed.
"Locally heavy rainfall is forecast across western Cuba and over much of Florida and the northern Gulf Coast into early next week," said the NHC Thursday. "In addition, the threat of rip currents will steadily increase along the Gulf coast from Florida westward to Louisiana over the Memorial Day weekend."
