Tropical Storm Bertha Makes Landfall On South Carolina Coast Wednesday

Tropical Storm Bertha made landfall Wednesday morning along the South Carolina coast shortly after receiving its name from the National Hurricane Center.

Bertha made its landfall around 8:30 AM CDT east of Charleston with maximum sustained winds of 50 miles per hour, nearly an hour after the NHC designated the system a tropical storm.

The system was moving inland northwest at 9 miles per hour and is expected to weaken into a tropical depression as it moves over land before becoming a remnant low by tonight.

Forecasters warn the storm poses a flash-flooding threat, with the possibility of between two to four inches of rain and isolated areas of up to eight inches of rain across eastern and central South Carolina into west central to far southwestern North Carolina and southwest Virginia.

Bertha is the second named storm of the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season, which officially begins on June 1.
