Secret Service Arrests Man Who Attempted to Jump Security Barrier

An individual was detained Sunday morning after trying to jump a security barrier at the White House the Secret Service said. The security barrier, located along the North Fence line, is a row of metal bike racks that are used as an additional security.

President Donald Trump was present at the White House at the time.

The racks were installed as a response to a spate of fence-jumping incidents over the last few years, including one person who made it into the White House in 2014. Another person managed to breach the White House perimeter in March, spending at least 15 minutes on the grounds before being captured by security.

The U.S. Secret Service tweeted about the incident around 8:01 a.m.

A section of Penn Avenue was closed while the Secret Service responded, but it has since been reopened.

Plans have been made to install a new, taller fence around the White House in response the the recent spate of fence jumpers. The National Capital Planning Commission approved a plan back in February that call for a fence that will be 10 feet, 7 inches with anti-climbing measures installed at the top.
