Convicted Murderer Charged With Two Felonies In Harris Co. Freed On $2 Bond

This is the Harris County Judicial system that Democrats Lina Hidalgo, Rodney Ellis, Kim Ogg & Sylvester Turner all wanted – the revolving door.

Fifty-year-old Melvin Cross Jr. has a lengthy criminal record including a murder conviction in Dallas County in 2001. Most recently he was charged here in Harris County with felony possession of a weapon and assault of a family member after court records state "he choked his girlfriend and stopped her blood circulation."

ABC13 reports that despite his lengthy criminal history, Cross was freed by Harris County 179th Criminal Court Judge Ana Martinez on bond of just $2. One dollar per felony charge.

Why the ridiculously low bond?

ABC13’s Courtney Carpenter reports:

“The reason he is out on such a low bond is that the state did not indict the case within 90 days, according to the judge's bail order.

Texas law says the bond for someone charged with a felony must be lowered if prosecutors aren't ready for trial within 90 days.

Judge Ana Martinez lowered Cross's bond. ABC13 reached out to her court to determine why the bonds were set at just $1. Martinez had no comment and referred us to the court records.”

So the judge refused comment while Kim Ogg’s office gave a generic statement that didn’t really address why they dragged their feet on this indictment.

The Harris County Bond Pandemic continues...
