NOAA Predicts Above-Average 2022 Atlantic Hurricane Season

As the official beginning of the 2022 Atlantic hurricane season draws closer, forecasters at NOAA's Climate Prediction Center are forecasting another above-average season.

The initial forecast released Tuesday calls for 14 to 21 named storms, with six to 10 becoming hurricanes. Of those, three to six are expected to reach Category 3 strength or above.

An ongoing La Niña expected to continue through the season, warmer-than-average sea surface temperatures in the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea, weaker tropical Atlantic trade winds and an enhanced west African monsoon are all being blamed by NOAA for the expected increase of activity.

NOAA will update their forecast in early August, just before the peak of hurricane season.

The season begins on June 1 and continues through the end of November.
