Gulf Coast Awaits Zeta's Arrival

Zeta is expected to enter the Gulf of Mexico Tuesday after moving across the Yucatan peninsula overnight.

While the storm may be over land long enough to weaken into a tropical storm, Zeta is expected to regain some strength while moving over Gulf waters, and could be at or near hurricane strength at landfall.

A Storm Surge Watch and Hurricane Watch are in effect for Hancock, Harrison, Jackson, Lower Jefferson, Lower Lafourche, Lower Plaquemines, Lower St. Bernard, Lower Terrebonne, Orleans, Southern Tangipahoa, St. Charles, St. John The Baptist, St. Tammany, and Upper St. Bernard parishes.

A Hurricane Watch is in effect for Ascension, Assumption, Livingston, St. James, Upper Jefferson, Upper Lafourche, Upper Plaquemines, and Upper Terrebonne.

A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for Northern Tangipahoa, Pearl River, Pike, St. Helena, Walthall, and Washington.

RAINFALL: An initial area of heavy rains will begin to impact the central Gulf Coast Tuesday night, spreading north into the Tennessee Valley on Wednesday. The core of the heavy rains associated with Zeta will push northeast from eastern Louisiana, across southern Mississippi, Alabama, northern Georgia through Wednesday night, and through the southern Appalachians into the Mid-Atlantic on Thursday. Rainfall totals of 2 to 4 inches with isolated amounts of 6 inches are expected across these areas, resulting in flash, urban, small stream, and minor river flooding.
