The National Weather Service is confirming that an EF-0 tornado touched down in Arabi on Friday evening.
The agency says the twister had wind speeds estimated at 85 miles per hour.
The hardest hit areas are along Rowley Boulevard and Norton Avenue between Judge Perez Drive and St. Bernard Highway.
Homes and businesses are dealing with roof damage, debris, downed power lines, and damaged electrical systems.
