Shark Sighting Off Louisiana Hailed As Good Sign For Gulf Health

Gulf of Mexico

Oceanographers and marine biologists are hailing the recent sighting of a white shark off Louisiana's coast.

According to Sea World's Ocearch tracker, the sighting on Tuesday is the first time a white shark has been seen in the region since 2012.

Researchers say the sighting shows the gulf waters are becoming healthy enough to attract the top-of-the-food-chain predators needed for a thriving eco-system.

The shark was found in the Gulf west of the Mississippi River, and a tracking device identified it as a female named Unama'ki who is an estimated 15 feet long and over 2,000 pounds.
