A new study is ranking Baton Rouge among the top 40 most dangerous cities in the country.
The state capital landed at #38 in the study by the non-partisan and objective research organization NORC at the University of Chicago. The research showed that Baton Rouge officials investigated a total of 78 homicides last year alone.
Sergeant L'Jean McKneely with the Baton Rouge Police Department says they are trying to implement new initiatives to connect with the community they serve and keep them safe.
However, McKneely admits the department is still dozens of officers short of the nearly 700 they'd like to have on the streets.
