The family of a man fatally shot by an East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's deputy on Saturday night says he was unarmed.

Family members tell The Advocate they asked for law enforcement to escort Melvin Watkins from a birthday party at a home on Highland Club Avenue in the southeastern part of the parish following a disturbance, and that he was leaving the scene.

The East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner's Office says Watkins was in a vehicle when he was shot.

The name of the deputy has not been released.

Louisiana State Police are investigating.
