The Army Corps of Engineers is beginning to close the Bonnet Carre Spillway.

This morning, the Corps closed 10 of the 168 bays that are currently open.

"Because the river has receded below the maximum flow at Red River Landing, the diversion of water into Lake Pontchartrain is no longer needed to safely pass the river flow through the New Orleans area," the Corps said in a press release.

Today marked the 74th day of operation of the spillway, its second of the year.

This is the first time in history that the spillway has been pushed into action twice in the same year and also used in back-to-back years.
