Former OLOL Foundation President Waives Right To Grand Jury

The former president of the Our Lady of the Lake charitable foundation is waiving his right to a grand jury indictment and a preliminary hearing.

John Paul Funes appeared in court yesterday on charges alleging he embezzled more than $500,000 from the foundation.

Court documents show Funes took the funds for personal use, wrote fraudulent checks, took charter flights for football games and shopped with Visa gift cards meant for cancer patients.

He will not be detained until his trial, but is expected to plead guilty when he is arraigned on June 20th.
