Louisiana SPCA Urges Pet Owners To Have A Plan For Hurricane Season

Listening Closely

The Louisiana SPCA is urging pet owners to make evacuation plans that include their animals now that hurricane season is here.

During Hurricane Katrina, upwards of 104,000 pets were left behind as residents fled. About 44% of the people who chose not to evacuate did so because they didn't want to leave their pets.

The pet shelter has several recommendations for pet owners preparing the evacuation plans and they include: making sure the pet has up-to-date vaccinations, updating ID tags, getting the pet microchipped and making a list of accommodations that are pet friendly.
