Virginia School Board Unanimously Votes To Allow Teachers To Carry Guns

Teachers in one Virginia county will be allowed to arm themselves when they return to work in the fall. The school board in Lee County voted unanimously to allow select teachers in the district's 11 schools to carry a firearm in the classroom.

Many teachers have already volunteered to be part of the program. In order to carry a weapon on school grounds, they will have to undergo a strict application process which includes an extensive background check and mandatory firearm training. The school district will cover the cost of the guns and the required training sessions.

Board members explained that arming teachers is the most cost-effective way to keep students safe because the district lacks the funds to hire a school resource officer or to install metal detectors in all 11 schools.

Superintendent Brian Austin said that the identity of the armed teachers will be kept confidential.
