Broken Weld Of Steel Beams Cited In Library Construction Scare

Work on a library in downtown Baton Rouge is expected to resume Friday after it was abruptly halted Wednesday evening over fear the building was not structurally sound.

Early reports suggested there was an unusual settling that resulted in cracks on the fourth floor. Buildings in the area were evacuated and the area was cordoned off.

Investigators determined Thursday that a weld connecting two steel beams broke and has been fixed.
