The ACLU of Louisiana is urging school officials to allow students to take part in a nationwide protest.
The National School Walkout on Wednesday honors the 17 people killed in last month's Florida school shooting and calls on lawmakers to address gun violence in schools.
In an open letter released yesterday, ACLU officials say the students have a right to engage in political speech.
