Tax Hike Proposal To Fund BR Police Raises Withdrawn

A proposed eight-mill property tax increase to fund higher paychecks for Baton Rouge police officers is no longer under consideration.

Metro Councilman Matt Watson withdrew it Thursday after initial support of the tax hike waned when his colleagues questioned whether it was the best route to making Louisiana's capital city a safer place.

If the tax hike would have been approved by council, it would have gone before voters this spring.
