Otto became a category 1 hurricane Tuesday as the storm continued to meander off the eastern coasts of Costa Rica and Nicaragua.
Otto is the seventh hurricane of the 2016 Atlantic season that ends on Nov. 30. It is also the latest hurricane formation on record in the Caribbean, beating the 1969 formation of Martha by about a day says the National Hurricane Center.
The hurricane, which had been nearly stationary, has started a slow move to the west. That forward speed should increase as a mid-level ridge builds over the Caribbean and a landfall near the border of Nicaragua and Costa Rica is expected on Thursday.
