A former East Baton Rouge Parish deputy is being sued by a former jail inmate he reportedly hit with a chair.

Joshua Smith was incarcerated in March 2023 when he had a disagreement with a jailer. The lawsuit says Deputy Aaron Johnson intervened by bashing Smith in the face with a metal folding chair.

Johnson was later fired from his job and indicted for malfeasance in office and aggravated battery.

The East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office is also named as a defendant in Smith's lawsuit.
