The East Baton Rouge Parish school board is recommending Adam Smith as an interim superintendent.

Sito Narcisse stepped down from the position on Friday.

Narcisse's resignation came six weeks after the School Board rejected a contract extension and a series of pay raises that would have made him Louisiana's highest-paid school superintendent.

School board members will vote Tuesday on whether to keep Smith in the job.

Smith has taught in East Baton Rouge for 25 years, and has been a principal at several of the district's schools.
