The fall 2023 inshore shrimping season is closing at sunset today for many Louisiana waterways.

State officials say the average white shrimp size in the affected waterways is too small to be legal, and the season is closing to give the shrimp time to grow larger.

Lake Pontchartrain, the Chef Menteur and Rigolets Passes, and several other waterways are exempt from the closure.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries will monitor the areas that are still open, and will close them if it becomes necessary.
