The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development alerted drivers using I-55 southbound to be aware of crews and equipment being mobilized around the site of Monday's deadly crashes that involved 168 vehicles and left eight dead.

Drivers may see the activity between Ponchatoula and LaPlace as the crews are beginning temporary repair work for the southbound lanes that could take up to two weeks to complete.

"There are no additional closures to note," DOTD said Friday. "Southbound lanes remain open, and they will taper into one lane near the site of Monday’s accident. Currently, the left lane is open. Once temporary repairs are complete in the right lane, it will open, and the left lane will close for repairs."

Northbound lanes remain closed with no timeline for reopening.

"DOTD and a third-party consultant have completed their separate inspections and are analyzing the data," the agency added. "The results of those inspections will determine the extent of permanent repairs needed for both the north and southbound lanes."
